Programs Offered
MT. STERLING COMMUNITY CENTER PROGRAMS and ACTIVITIES
The center is handicapped accessible and open from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. (The center may close on some Fridays in July and August at 1:00 pm). Come and visit the Mt. Sterling Community Center and see how it can become “A Place for You”!
The Mt. Sterling Community Center offers a variety of programs and activities for the residents of the Mt. Sterling community. Some are offered as special events, such as “Christmas in the Village”, Women’s Wellness Day, Easter Egg Hunt and July 4th Celebration. Others offered in the summer months include the “Kid’s Gardening Club”, Community Garden and “Water Play Day” (Weather permitting from 12:30 – 1:30 pm—water games, sprinklers and a visit from the village water tank on Thursdays in July and August).
Short descriptions of regular programs that occur on a weekly basis are listed below. All Community Center activities are offered at no cost.

- Open Gym for High School and above is held on Mondays & Tuesdays from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. Open Gym for Middle School and under is held September through May on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00 – 5:30 pm. Registration Forms are required for all ages.
- Alcoholics Anonymous support groups meet on Tuesdays and Sundays from 8:00 – 9:00 pm.
- GED Classes are held September through May and no appointments or fees are necessary. Come and meet with the GED instructor between 6:00 – 9:00 pm on Mondays and Thursdays.
- Sewing Group meets on Wednesdays from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm and Saturdays from 10:00 am – 3:30 pm. Basic sewing instruction, quilt making and sewing machines are available. Children under the age of 10 are required to have a parent/guardian in attendance. Registration Forms are required for all ages.
- Women’s Bible/Book Study meets on Tuesdays from 9:00 – 10:00 am. Books written by a variety of inspirational authors, such as Beth Moore, Stormie Omartian and Dr. David Jeremiah are studied and discussed.
- Grace Bible Mission Bible Study meets on Wednesdays from 6:00 – 8:00 pm to study and discuss biblical scriptures.
- TOPS “Take Off Pounds Sensibly” meet on Tuesdays from 6:00 – 7:00 pm for weight loss support.
- Ohio Benefits Bank- The MSCC is now one of over 1,200 Ohio Benefit Bank (OBB) sites throughout Ohio. OBB sites are available for community members to find assistance programs, such as healthcare coverage and food assistance (formerly known as Food Stamps). Individuals and families can meet with a trained OBB counselor to discuss programs available for Ohioans in need. The counselor will answer questions and help in the process of applying for programs for those in need on Tuesdays 4 pm – 7 pm, Thursdays 9 am - 1 pm, or other times by appointment.
- Community Garden
- Sterling Grace Church, a Christ centered, Bible based church meets every Sunday morning at 10:15 am in a casual and relaxed atmosphere.
- “Sterling Socialites” provides a gathering time for folks 55 and older to play cards or dominoes, have a snack and enjoy fellowship of old and new friendships on Mondays from 1:00 – 3 pm.
- Food Pantry is open on Tuesdays from 4:00 – 7:00 pm and Thursdays from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. Food pantry recipients must meet the household income guidelines set by the Ohio Job and Family Service Agency. In addition, recipients must have a Mt. Sterling address or 869 land line exchange. Proof of residence and a picture ID are required at the first visit.
- Day Camps for youth grades K- 5th are held during school spring break and twice in the summer. Camp is held from 1:00 – 4:00 pm and some of the past camp titles focused on Ohio History, Middle Ages, Art, Math, Games, International Culture and The Great Outdoors. The August camp is titled “Wild Ohio” on August 8th, 9th and 10th. Pre-Registration is required.
- After School and Tutoring Program is held from October through April and allows children to do their homework, receive tutoring help if needed, have a snack, play games in the gym, participate in crafts and other educational activities. The Madison Plains Local Schools assists the center with this program and Pre-Registration is required.
The gym is open for walking from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm daily. Christian book library is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.

A few of the center’s goals for 2012 are to offer a free summer lunch program to children in the community, increase activities for seniors (exercise program presented by a certified Arthritis Foundation instructor) and for toddlers.
The center accepts and appreciates all financial donations, as well as donations of personal care items and shelf stable food items for the food pantry, sewing and craft items, school supplies and children’s books. Volunteers are the heart of the center as they lead and assist programs and activities. There are always new opportunities to serve as a volunteer—stop by the center for a volunteer application.
